About This Project

This project comprised a detailed needs assessment for recreation programs/services, facilities and amenities for all age groups, to be provided in an indoor Town-serving complex. The Centre celebrated its Grand Opening on April 16, 2011. The Town’s website describes the Centre as follows:

The Cobourg Community Centre (CCC) is a 142,000 square foot complex designed as a multi- use cultural, arts, wellness, business, fitness and sports centre. The Centre includes a welcoming Grand Hall area – ‘a community living room’ complete with fireplace, comfortable seating and cafe – a place to meet old friends and make new ones; a sports and performance hall; four multi-purpose rooms; Senior Centre; Youth Centre; child minding room; indoor walking / running track; one 2,000+ seat arena bowl with NHL size ice surface, digital scoreboard, press box and radiant under-floor heating (with concert seating for up to 4,000); one 400-seat practice arena; a mini-stick play area and more. Your new Cobourg Community Centre is a place for everyone to play, learn, connect and enjoy.

The consulting team worked with YMCA Northumberland as a key stakeholder and potential partner to the municipality in service provision and co-location of indoor facilities. Detailed surveys of potential users were included, as part of community-wide consultation to ensure recommended facilities responded directly to local needs.

The needs assessment was supported by a community-based design charrette led by the project architects, and a business plan prepared by MKA. The Centre was immediately approved for funding in the spring of 2009 and opened April 16, 2011.
